Otis College of Art and Design

Established in 1918, Otis College of Art and Design is a private institution with an urban campus spanning 5 acres. As of fall 2022, it boasts an undergraduate enrollment of 1,268 students and follows a semester-based academic calendar.

The college’s origins trace back to General Harrison Gray Otis, who, in 1918, dedicated his home to the city to promote the advancement of the arts.

For nearly eight decades, Otis thrived in its downtown location. However, in 1997, the college transitioned to the Elaine & Bram Goldsmith Campus on the West side.

This move marked a significant transformation from a Spanish-Moorish mansion to a seven-story cube, showcasing Otis’s evolution.

A notable feature is the 115,000-square-foot Ahmanson Hall, which underwent renovation in 1997. Departing from the conventional classroom setup, Ahmanson Hall was redesigned to emulate an artist’s loft or a functional studio.

The open plan of Ahmanson Hall fosters communication among departments and encourages interaction between students and faculty members.
