Sloan Research Fellowships

Sloan Research Fellowships

Since 1955, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has been granting the Sloan Research Fellowships on an annual basis.

These fellowships, each spanning two years and providing $75,000 in funding, aim to catalyze essential research endeavors undertaken by early-career scientists and scholars who exhibit exceptional promise.

Recipients of these fellowships are individuals engaged in research within the domains of chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, or a closely related field.

The selection of fellows is based on their individual research achievements, innovative thinking, and their potential to emerge as influential figures within the scientific community through their significant contributions to their respective fields.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree in disciplines such as chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, molecular biology, neuroscience, physics, or a related field.

2. They must hold a faculty position at an educational institution in the United States or Canada, with the stipulation that the position is on a tenure-track but not yet tenured as of September 15 in the year of nomination. Furthermore, the faculty role should include regular teaching responsibilities.

3. The Sloan Research Fellowship Program aims to acknowledge and reward promising early-career faculty members who have the potential to bring transformative innovations to their respective fields of study.

Typically, successful candidates for this Fellowship exhibit a robust track record of significant independent research achievements that highlight their ingenuity and the likelihood of emerging as future leaders within the scientific community.

Nominees are usually a few years past the completion of their Ph.D. to demonstrate a competitive history of independent, substantial research.

4. In line with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting underrepresented minorities in the sciences, the Foundation strongly encourages the nomination of qualified women and minority candidates.

Documents Required

1. A formal letter of nomination from a department head or a senior researcher, officially putting forward the candidate and outlining their qualifications, initiative, and research contributions.

2. The candidate’s comprehensive curriculum vitae, should encompass a list of their scientific publications.

3. Two exemplary research articles authored by the candidate, highlighting their independent research endeavors.

4. A concise, one-page statement provided by the candidate, delineates their significant scientific accomplishments and immediate research plans.

5. Three letters of recommendation from other researchers (ideally not all affiliated with the same institution) expressing their support for the candidate’s nomination.

It’s important to emphasize that both the nomination letters and the letters of support hold substantial weight in the selection process.

Selection Committees scrutinize these letters attentively. They provide nominators and support writers with the opportunity to offer insights about the nominees that may not be apparent from other application materials such as the CV and publication list.

Selection Committees recommend that letters of support be authored by individuals capable of providing an objective and well-informed assessment of the nominee’s work.

Letters submitted by co-authors, close associates, or mentors may be less valuable to Selection Committees compared to those written by individuals with a greater professional detachment from the nominee’s work.”
