About the Scholarship

Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) are members of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) organization. During their graduate studies at Stanford, Knight-Hennessy scholars gain strong subject competence in addition to exposure to a broad range of subjects and cultures.

Through seminars, lectures, projects, and experiences, participants in the King Global Leadership Program (KGLP) develop their transformational leadership talents.

Academics work together and prepare to address important global concerns like climate change, healthcare, governance, and policy, and education through KGLP.

For Knight-Hennessy Scholars, there are no age, college or university, subject of study, or desired professional path restrictions.

Applications are encouraged from all residents and citizens. We don’t mandate that applicant check with colleges, universities, or other organizations for recommendations.

Eligibility Requirements

There are two fundamental criteria for eligibility.

Requirement 1: Admission to Stanford

1. In addition to applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS), you must apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, such as but not limited to a DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or Ph.D. program. You must fulfill at least one of the following four conditions:

2. In order to start both programs in the same academic year, you are applying to KHS and a full-time graduate program at Stanford independently but concurrently.

3. Even if you have already been accepted to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program and have opted to delay your start date, you will still apply to KHS so that you can start both in the same year.

4. You are a Stanford graduate student currently enrolled in one full-time graduate program; you will submit an application to add a second program so that you can start both KHS and the new one in the same academic year.

5. You intend to apply to KHS while you are still enrolled in your first year of the Stanford Ph.D. program in order to start KHS in your second year of enrollment.

No quotas are established by program or discipline. Please note that greater consideration will be given to applicants who will spend at least two years studying at Stanford.

Please note that there are just a handful of graduate degree programs at Stanford that accept Knight-Hennessy Scholars:

  • Applicants to the Honors Cooperative Program
  • Applicants to the Master of Liberal Arts
  • Applicants to the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD)
  • Current Stanford students applying for co-terminal graduate study
