Annamalai University

Annamalai University

Rajah Sir S.R.M. Annamalai Chettiyar, a businessman, founded Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College, and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College in the 1920s to educate the underprivileged and advancing Tamil literature.

These three institutions were taken over by the local government in 1929, and they were renamed Annamalai University.

The first private institution in India, Annamalai Institution is among the biggest public residential universities in Asia. Located in Tamil Nadu, India’s Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram, it’s also one of the oldest and most well-known universities in the region.

Due to financial difficulties, the Tamil Nadu government acquired it in 2013 and is currently in charge of appointing all pro and vice-chancellor positions.

The ten faculties on campus—agriculture, arts, dentistry, education, engineering and technology, fine arts, Indian languages, marine sciences, medical, and science—spread over an approximate 6.1 km2 area.

The Rajah Muthiah Medical College (RMMCH), the university’s medical college, was established in 1985 as a makeshift structure with 450 beds.

Today, it is an enormous complex with 1400 beds spread across more than 75 hectares of land. Regarded highly in the realm of medical education, RMMCH is currently considered one of Southern India’s top medical colleges.

The Al-Mihad Institute (Dubai), OUR International (Abu Dhabi), the Al Hilal Education Center (UAE), the Al Noor Education Center (Oman), and a study center in Toronto are only a few of its international campuses.

Renowned for its dedication to remote learning, Annamalai University offers more than 500 courses and has the highest enrollment rates in India for this kind of education.

It was the first university in the nation to provide postgraduate distance learning degrees in applied psychology, chemistry, physics, botany, zoology, law, and bioinformatics.
