Since CSU was founded as an agricultural institution, its athletic teams were known as the Aggies, and its green and gold uniforms served as a symbol of farming.

Although the school retained its colors, the more than fifteen varsity sports teams are now referred to as the Rams. They participate in the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I.
