The Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship

The Leverhulme Trust was established in 1925 through the Will of the First Viscount Leverhulme with the aim of supporting scholarships for research and educational purposes. Since its inception, the Trust has been providing financial support for various endeavors, including research projects, fellowships, studentships, bursaries, and prizes.

The Trust places particular emphasis on the following criteria:

1. Originality: The research should go beyond incremental developments within a single field.

2. Importance: The work should have the potential to facilitate further research or inquiry.

3. Significance: The proposed research should hold relevance beyond a specific discipline, sparking interest among those in other fields.

4. Merit: The quality of the research design and methodology, as well as the suitability of the researchers and the institution to achieve the proposed research objectives, is essential.

The Faculty of Arts & Humanities has given its approval to submit two applications for funding through the Leverhulme Trust.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Applicants should not have previously held a full-time permanent academic position at a UK university or a similar UK institution, and they cannot hold such a position simultaneously with the Early Career Fellowship.

2. All applicants must have obtained a doctoral degree or possess equivalent research experience by the time they begin the Fellowship.

3. Applications are welcome from individuals with a doctoral degree who have defended their thesis for the viva voce examination within four years of the application deadline.

4. Due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust will consider applications from candidates who submitted their doctoral theses for examination up to five years prior to the closing date, provided they can demonstrate that their work was significantly impacted by the pandemic.

5. Applicants must either hold a degree (of any type) from a UK higher education institution when starting the Fellowship or, at the application deadline, have an academic position in the UK (e.g., a fixed-term lectureship or fellowship) that began at least four months prior to the closing date.

6. Candidates who have served or are currently serving as Principal Investigators on three-year postdoctoral research projects or have held or are holding similar three-year postdoctoral positions to pursue their own research are not eligible to apply.

7. Each candidate may submit only one application per year, and individuals who were previously unsuccessful in their applications are permitted to reapply.

8. Candidates cannot apply for both an Early Career Fellowship and a Study Abroad Studentship in the same year.

The Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship Value

The program operates through a collaborative funding model, where the Leverhulme Trust covers 50% of the Fellow’s total salary expenses, encompassing National Insurance, superannuation, and London allowance if applicable.

This Trust contribution is capped at £26,000 per year for each year of the Fellowship. The remaining portion of these costs is the responsibility of the host institution.

In subsequent years, the Trust’s contribution typically increases in accordance with salary adjustments and standard increments, up to the annual maximum of £26,000.

If the Fellowship is part-time, the Trust’s maximum annual contribution is adjusted proportionally. Additionally, the Fellow has the option to request up to £6,000 per year in research expenses to support their research activities.

Duration

The Fellowships are valid for a duration of three years when pursued on a full-time basis.

If there are health-related concerns, disabilities, or childcare responsibilities, the Trust is open to considering requests for part-time participation, which would extend the overall timeframe proportionately. Fellowships must begin between September 1, 2024, and May 1, 2025.

Application Process

1. Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out to staff members in the appropriate department who can serve as mentors and aid them in preparing their application.

2. Application forms are accessible through departments and mirror the application available on The Leverhulme Trust’s online application system.

3. Additional guidance can be located on The Leverhulme Trust website.

4. Every application submitted to the Faculty Office by departments should comprise the applicant’s completed application form, an endorsement from the Head of Department, and a supporting statement from the mentor.

Incomplete applications will be considered ineligible and will not be reviewed.

Application Deadlines

Applicants are advised to get in touch with their intended department to learn about the specific deadlines within that department.

The faculty deadline for departments, not applicants, to send in complete applications – which should include the applicant’s application form, the departmental endorsement from the Head of Department, and the mentor’s supporting statement – is by 4 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2023, to be emailed to l.rego@ucl.ac.uk.

The Faculty will inform departments of their decisions regarding selected applicants no later than Thursday, December 14, 2023.

Only applications chosen by the Faculty will be eligible for submission to the Leverhulme Trust.

Selected applicants must adhere to the funder’s deadline and submit their online applications to the Leverhulme Trust by 4 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2024.”
