Freshmen do not need to reside on campus. Campus Life Time, which takes place every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., allows students to attend free concerts, eat free cuisine, and relax from the rigors of classes.

Annually, students meet for events such as the Roth Pond Regatta, a race of student-made cardboard boats, and the Shirley Strum Kenny Student Arts Festival, a week-long showcase of student work.

Students can also participate in over 300 student organizations on campus, including over 30 fraternities and sororities. On the field, the Stony Brook Seawolves play in the NCAA Division I America East Conference.

Students can get a workout off the field by biking and hiking around Stony Brook’s huge, wooded campus, which includes the Ashley Schiff Park Preserve. For an urban experience, New York City is only 60 miles away.

Stony Brook is home to the sole undergraduate journalism school in the system, as well as the highly regarded Stony Brook University Medical Center. The institution also maintains a facility in Southampton and a teaching building in Manhattan.
