The Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), which has its takeoff campus in the Kurutie Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State and is located at Okerenkoko, was established by and is owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria has officially recognized or accredited NMU.

The National Universities Commission of Nigeria has given Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko (NMU) official recognition as a coeducational higher education institution.
NMU (Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko) offers courses and programs leading to bachelor’s degrees in a variety of fields of study in addition to other officially recognized higher education degrees.
