ESA scholarship promotes and helps those who want to work in the video game industry, whether they play or contribute to game development. They are also aware of the high cost of a college degree and the ongoing efforts made by the industry to diversify.
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) Foundation was created by the American video game industry twenty-one years ago.
Since its inception, the ESA Foundation has shown how the sector is dedicated to enhancing the lives and enlarging the horizons of young people who are underrepresented by running initiatives that help students, institutions of higher learning, and nonprofit organizations make the most of interactive technologies.
About the ESA Scholarship
The ESA Foundation hopes that by providing three collegiate scholarships to students, it will encourage play, design, development, and innovation in the video game industry.
Over 400 women, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and minority students from all over the United States have benefited from the Foundation’s scholarship program thus far in pursuing their goals of obtaining degrees in the field of video games or competing in collegiate esports.
1. The ESA Foundation LGBTQ+ Service Scholarship, Co-Awarded by Gay Gaming Professionals
For students pursuing video game art degrees, collegiate esports, or content creation while actively supporting their LGBTQ+ communities.
Debuted in 2019, the scholarship co-awarded by Gay Gaming Professionals recognizes students who show a commitment to service in their local, regional, and/or national LGBTQ+ communities.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants Must Be:
- Woman, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming; LGBTQ+; OR racial/ethnic minority
- Actively performing service or volunteer work for an LGBTQ+ community
- Pursuing a degree leading to a career in video game arts and sciences, competing on or managing your college esports team/club, or pursuing streaming content creation
- Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited four-year college or university in fall 2023
- U.S. citizen
2. The ESA Foundation Esports Scholarship
As part of its 2020-21 scholarship program, the ESA Foundation introduced its first-ever esports scholarship, offering academic support for underrepresented students competitively gaming through their U.S. colleges and universities.
For students who play esports on a collegiate team and are pursuing a four-year academic degree.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be:
- Women or minorities currently
- Competing on your college esports team or club or confirmed to compete at the collegiate level in Fall 2023
- Current high school senior or college freshman, sophomore or junior
- Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at an accredited four-year college or university in Fall 2023
- U.S. citizen
3. The ESA Foundation Computer and Video Game Arts and Sciences Scholarship
Established in 2007, the ESA Foundation’s Computer and Video Game Arts and Sciences Scholarship has been awarded to nearly 400 women and minority students across the country, enabling them to follow their dream of earning video game-related degrees.
Aside from providing students with much-needed funding, the scholarship offers non-monetary opportunities, including networking and mentoring sessions and access to major industry events like the Game Developers Conference and E3.
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be:
1. Woman or minority
2. Pursuing a degree leading to a career in computer and video game arts and sciences
3. Current high school senior or college freshman, sophomore or junior
4. Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at an accredited four-year college or university in Fall 2022
5. U.S. citizen
